When the witness is produced for the opposing party, the lawyer’s questioning is called “cross examination” of the witness. When a witness is produced for his/her client, the lawyer’s questioning is called “direct examination” of the witness. The lawyers present evidence primarily by asking questions of witnesses. They may attempt to demonstrate to the jury weaknesses in the evidence of the opposing party. Lawyers may present to the jury the evidence essential to their client’s claims or defenses.
